EMCs, LEDs, Panels, and Modules
The digital marqee is made up of panels called modules. The modules are 12” by 12” squares and can be arranged in almost any size. Within each module are many pixels. A pixel is a cluster of three LEDs; one red, one green, one blue. Each pixel can create a wide range of colors because it contains the three different colored LEDs.
The distance between each pixel in a module is called pitch. The pitch determines the resolution of the sign. The closer the pixels are together, the higher the resolution and clarity of the image. This is why EMCs located close to pedestrian or slow-moving traffic should have higher resolution.
A Resolution for Your Needs
Husk Signs creates EMCs with pixel pitches of 20 mm, 16 mm, 13 mm, and 10 mm, with 10 mm being the highest resolution and 20 mm being the lowest resolution. Factors for Planning Your EMC
Before we start manufacturing your EMC, we will help you through the planning process. There are three factors we take into account when planning the best size and pixel quality for your EMC.
Distance From The Road: Signs that are farther from the road will require less resolution than signs that are closer to the road. If people will be seeing your EMC up close, more detail will be visible, and you want it to look great! If the EMC is farther away, people won’t be able to see the detail as much, and you can have a lower resolution. There are likely zoning restrictions in your city that will need to be taken into account when planning the distance from the road as well.
Will The Sign Be Installed On A Pole Or On The Ground? This consideration is closely related to distance from the road. Think about who will be seeing your sign the most-pedestrians or drivers? If you are hoping to catch the eye of a lot of pedestrians, a sign on a pole will probably not be the best choice since it will be much harder to read for someone looking up from the ground. Consider your audience, any zoning restrictions, and other factors to decide if your sign will be installed on a pole or on the ground.
Will The Sign Primarily Feature Copy, Art, Or Animation? Before we can decide what size and resolution to use for your EMC, we need to know what type of content your sign will feature most often. A sign featuring a lot of art or animation will require a higher resolution because the picture needs to be much clearer for people to see it well. Text is easier to read and requires less resolution to be seen clearly. Maybe a combination of all three types of content will work best for your business or organization.
