Billboard Advertising in Evansville, IN: A Complete Guide (2026)
You can see that billboards and signs are getting plenty of use just by driving down the Lloyd Expressway or Frederica Street. The hard part for business owners in places like Evansville and Owensboro is that in a mid-sized market, competition is fierce. It’s hard to get seen in any of that outdoor advertising real estate.
With a limited marketing budget, you must ask yourself: Is renting advertising space on a billboard the right choice for directing potential customers to your business? Alternatively, is having your own digital sign—acting as a 24/7 salesperson in front of your business and allowing you to change advertising messages immediately—a better choice for your business’s profit growth?
Types of Outdoor Advertising and Signs Available in Evansville
It’s not just because of zoning laws or creativity, but there are basically three sign options that small businesses have in the Tri-State. You may have had all three at your company at some point.
Static Billboards or Changeable Letter Signs
This is what you see at a lot of businesses. A static sign says the name of the business and never changes. Hopefully it will at least light up at night. This also counts the signs that are covered with a vinyl tarp and have another business printed on the tarp. They advertise the location of a business and that’s all. Channel Letter signs are a step up from this, because they can add attention-grabbing effects in the lighting or in the way the logo of the business is shown.
As far as a billboard goes, this is a monthly rented sign that is up by a highway or a busy intersection. For additional fees, they can be lit at night or often have a discount if you’re going to leave them up for several months. Your message has to be very general and vague if you’re going to leave the same marketing message up for three months. But that works for a lot of use cases.
Changeable letter signs give you a little more flexibility than a static billboard or sign. They aren’t stuck with the same message, but they still take some effort to change. If a letter blows off in the wind (like a recent restaurant that boasted, “WE LIVER” for a few weeks) or the neighborhood kids move the letters around, you’ve got another problem on your hands.
These are also often rentals and don’t show the permanence or “Landmark” quality of a constructed and permanent sign. They aren’t very big, and other than a bunch of capital letters, you don’t have a lot of creative license.
Electronic Message Centers
An electronic Message Center is a digital LED lit sign that is like a giant TV advertising your business. Instead of a static sign showing your company, you can put your company name up with animations of snow falling, sunshine, or even your staff smiling and waving. It’s an attention getter that makes a great first impression before your customers even pull into your parking lot.
Most EMCs allow you to schedule your slides in advance, so you can always wish your prospective customers a Happy Mother’s Day, run specific daily specials, and easily switch out “Employee of the Month” announcements. Your creativity for your message is unlimited.
Would you Rather Rent or Own Your Brand?
When you rent space on a static billboard, your budget is sunk in a month and after that, your competitor could take over advertising in the same space. A static billboard sounds a lot cheaper if you only need one for a month, but after that, you may only have a few customers to show for it.
By investing in an EMC on your own property, you’re developing your billboard budget into an ongoing marketing asset. You can adjust your marketing message as much as you want, and if you sell the building and change locations, you can either include the EMC as part of the sale to build equity, or remove it and take it with you. We’ve had some of our customers use their EMC as the FOR SALE sign when they changed locations. Talk about an attention-getter!
Like any rental, after a year or so of renting billboard space, you could have paid for an EMC. An EMC that you had complete control over and you didn’t have to pay a graphic designer or construction crew to change every time you wanted it updated.
